Newcastle

January 1-2nd
After having survived the New Year, we set out to explore the city. We returned back to the Rocks to check out George street, which is home to almost everything consumer related in Sydney. I noticed that there was a high influence of Asian and Indian culture on food in the city. There was also a good number of diversity within the city. After eating, we explored the park and small shops back in Kings Cross. It was very hot, a nice 95˚F, compared to back in Maryland, which was a high of 35˚F, when we left.

As we made plans to depart for Newcastle, I learned a few things about Australian television: Most channels revolve around sports, like in America; There is not a huge difference between cable and basic cable privileges like in the States. Things we pay for on HBO are shown freely on most channels in Australia (ie. True Blood); Child programming is terrifying and I will never let any child I know watch it.
We left for Newcastle on the 2nd and arrived in one of the sleepiest beach towns I’ve ever been to. In Australia, lots of families leave to go on holiday during the New Year so that means a lot of places seem like ghost towns because half the residents are gone. We did however learn that other than shipping, Newcastle is famous for its food. They had more restaurants than any other city we visited on the entire trip within a three-block radius of our Ibis hotel. Definitely was a treat to the tummy and the sea air made it very pleasant to sleep.
