Dungog: The Middle of Nowhere

January 3-4th
Even though Newcastle was a nice place, there wasn’t much to do so we made plans to train our way to Brisbane, so we could see more of the country than we would if we flew there. We decided to book on CountryLink which would pick us up once we arrived in Dungog.

Dungog is in New South Wales and is literally in the middle of NOWHERE. The entire town takes up maybe four blocks, consisting of two hotels on the one side of town and a large pub on the other, sandwiching the train station, small shops and cafes and few homes between them. The population is 2,102 people, and maybe 700 were left when we arrived from those who left for holiday. Needless to say it was an interesting experience visiting there, especially our extra 5hrs there due to our train being delayed from Sydney.

Luckily, all the locals were really nice and very helpful in helping us make arrangements for if we needed to possibly stay the night in town. That was the first time I’d ever been scared away from home because as night fell at the train station, we had some scares with local animals and sounds of the Australian night. There are some birds that reside there that didn’t get the memo that Dungog is not the jungle so they should stop impersonating sounds from it. Our train finally arrived at 11pm so we spent most of the next day traveling to Brisbane.
